May and June and July, 2026
Dear Friends,
Yes, we are still here. Being retired is not all we were led to believe it would be! In June, Floyd learned how to use an electric wood splitter to split 5 pickup-loads of wood a friend at church gave us. Such a blessing, but hard work. We are paying the boys up the hill to stack the pieces for us. Our friend also brought us pine cones and kindling to start fires, and he’s also going to provide wood, pine cones, and kindling for a single mom who goes to our Bible study.
Back in May, Floyd was invited to speak at Moody Bible Institute’s 2-day Missionary Aviation Conference in Spokane. We gave all our tiny plant starts to a neighbor, who has a greenhouse. Then, we spent a week in Spokane, visiting family, friends, Red Bench Bible Church, seeing another granddaughter graduate from high school, and attending the Spokane Symphony with friends we have known for 50 years, from our newly-wed days.
July has been very hot, and Floyd also has his seasonal allergic asthma. We thought he had escaped this year because he usually has it in June. So, we have hunkered down in the shut-up house, and Floyd is writing, and I’m sewing a quilt. The rest of our time is taken up with upkeep of our house and property, two Bible studies, inviting people over, making pop-in visitors feel welcome, harvesting from the garden, and all the things that everyone does every day.
The home school co-op is over for this school year. It was great fun, and Floyd will teach again next year. I won’t because I can’t hear the sweet children very well, and I don’t like always having to keep saying, “Could you speak up; I can’t hear you.” I will continue to collect books for their mobile library, to save parents having to buy required reading materials. On Sundays, we pick up a couple ladies who want to go to church with us. It’s a 50-minute drive, but they chat and laugh, and we all love the church.
We are retired, but we have decided we need a day off!
I finally got my glasses after cataract surgery, and I must say that colors and light are brighter than I have seen them for many years! It reminds me a little of the First Corinthians verse about seeing in a glass darkly. I guess all of us on earth live with spiritual cataracts that cloud our vision of what our life will be like with Jesus Christ.
This morning, when I went out to water the garden, a doe and her twins were nibbling on the pile of garden debris that I had thrown out of the garden. I don’t know how they communicate, but suddenly the babies turned and ran, while she continued to eye me until they were far enough away. Then she followed her fawns. They are so cute, in the way mice are cute: a real nuisance. One of the deer ate all of the blossoms off my geranium! I guess they think it’s candy. Fortunately, the geranium seemed to enjoy the pruning, and I have even more flowers now. Another spiritual lesson: the trials and pain of pruning make us grow more.
Floyd and I went to the post office today to pick up our mail, as we do every other day. As we were leaving, I saw a woman older than myself, limping away from the post office and down the road, with her mail and her little pocketbook. Well, there are no buses, and the temperature was cruising towards 90+. We stopped and asked if she would like a ride home.
“I’m going to the pharmacy,” she said brightly. That’s about 8 blocks from the post office.
“We’ll take you there and then take you home.”
She was glad to comply. I had to help her into the pickup. She is 94 years old, one of triplets, and her mother named them Mary, Marianne, and Marilyn. Confusing? Marilyn told us that she walks everywhere in Plains.
We waited for her prescription which had, of course, not come in. So, we took her home. I asked if she wanted our phone number, but she closed the tall gate.
What was that all about? I don’t really know. Should I go visit her? Should we give her our phone number and
offer to drive her places?
Floyd has gotten my Psalm 119 Bible study guide into eBook form. It’s now available on our website. Yay!! We just got the paperback proof today. There are a few formatting things we’d like to correct – nothing substantial – but I think we won’t fix those right now so the books will be available sooner. Hopefully, in a few weeks.
