The Bible CompassAugust and September, 2026Hello, Everyone! This is our August newsletter, which we forgot to send you. It was a busy month! The highlight of our August came on the first day, when a friend texted me and told me that Spokane was on fire. I went online to see what she was talking about. (These photos came off the internet and are fires in and around Spokane.)
About a minute later, our older son called to say that they were being evacuated from the eastern edge of Spokane County. A minute after that, our younger son called to say that they were fine and were evacuated to a friend’s home.
Shortly after that, he called again to tell us that the friend’s home was also evacuated because of imminent fire danger, and they thought they might have to go to Missoula because there were no more motel rooms in the Spokane/Coeur D”Alene area. We told them to come stay with us, and to bring the other family with them.
They arrived at 2am, having had to drive the northern, longer route because the roads to the Interstate were closed because of fires. When I marveled later that the road was dark, narrow, pot-holed, curvy and unfamiliar, our daughter-in-law said God made adrenaline for a good reason, and He also gave us the Holy Spirit. We are blessed with wonderful children!
The four days and three nights were full of 6 adults, 7 children (4-15 years), 6 extra dogs, and three cats. Our oldest granddaughter had been house- and pet-sitting, when her house also came under evacuation. She brought the dog and two cats. The cats spent the entire 4 days in the towel closet in the bathroom off our bedroom.
Floyd and I had been to Costco on Saturday and bought toilet paper and a huge number of pastries, not knowing that we were going to need them all very soon. A neighbor lady brought us two flats of eggs from her chickens, and a family up the hill offered their guestroom for those who were allergic to cats.
The weather was excessively hot and smokey, and we all had to stay indoors, but the children played well together, and we had “church” at home on Sunday after everyone woke up. The adults and older kids played games, watched a movie, and shopped for things they had forgotten. Everyone helped cook and clean up. Their houses and neighborhoods were spared, and they were able to return home. Our older son’s home was also spared. We were so thankful to God for a house that is not huge, but that worked for the two families. We had enough bathrooms, and our freezer was well-stocked.
One special, sweet blessing for this Granny: Right before evacuation, the grandchildren were told to go to their rooms and gather what they wanted because maybe the house was going to burn. They ALL brought their quilts that I had made them! On the writing front, Floyd has been doing quite a bit of writing. He also conquered the dragons of self-publishing, and my Bible study guide on Psalm 119 – A Delighted Heart – is now available as an eBook and as a paperback! Check out our website, if you haven’t recently. He made it easier to find things. In consolidating everything, he stumbled upon the fact that between us, we have written sixteen (16!) books!
Our website is at the end of this letter. Love, Christine Montana Sunsets
